There is no universally “best” optional — the best optional is the one you can study consistently for a year. That said, data and toppers point to a few consistently strong choices.

Most Popular Optionals (by uptake)
- Geography — overlaps heavily with GS I and Prelims; abundant material
- Public Administration — short syllabus, overlaps GS II
- Sociology — compact, high-scoring, helps GS I & Essay
- Political Science & IR (PSIR) — massive GS II overlap
- History & Anthropology — favourite of humanities backgrounds
- Literature optionals (Hindi, Tamil, etc.) — very scoring if it is your mother tongue
How to Choose Your Optional Subject — 4 Rules
- Interest beats trends. You will read this subject for 12+ months; boredom kills more optionals than difficulty does.
- Check the syllabus overlap with GS — an overlapping optional effectively prepares two papers at once.
- Assess material availability — some optionals have scarce books and almost no test series.
- Look at your background honestly — engineers often do well with Maths or Physics only if they genuinely enjoy them; otherwise a humanities optional is safer.
Avoid These Traps
Do not pick an optional because a topper picked it, because a coaching institute pushes it, or because of “scaling” myths — UPSC has officially stated there is no scaling disadvantage for any optional. Your score depends on your answers, not the subject’s reputation.
